Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Fair. Paperback copy of this famous treatise on cards. Translated by William J. Hilliar. These Drake editions were published as cheaply as possible and this copy shows it. As you can see the bottom front corners are fragile. Only on the back does the injury extend into the text of the wrap. The binding is sound. The interior has no writing, markings, tears or other issues. The paper is toned and fragile. Paginates: wraps, title page, 189, [1]. No ads. I believe the complete translation was 201 pages but Drake abridged the early issues to save money. This is not rare or valuable but it is a pretty cool bit of ephemera. For the collector. See the notes for the publication history and how to determine dates on this title. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: this title was first published in French in 1861. The first publication in English was titled "The Sharper Detected" in 1863, London, Chapman & Hall. The book was translated again in 1881 with the title "Card Sharping Exposed." Finally, this Hilliar translation was published in 1891. More notes: now about the date. Drake began publishing this title around 1902-1903 and that early edition is notable for the copyright date being omitted. This book dates sometime between 1904-1927 which is when Drake was doing business at 1006 Michigan Avenue; the address is seen on the back cover. I am guessing circa 1920 but I don't know. He moved to 179 N. Michigan Avenue in 1928. Check the Chicago business directories of that era to find out. Please do not rely on the copyright date for the date of publication.…

Robert-Houdin (1805 - 1871) was a French watchmaker, magician and illusionist, widely recognized as the father of the modern style of conjuring. He transformed magic from a pastime for the lower classes, seen at fairs, to an entertainment for the wealthy, which he offered in a theatre opened in Paris, a legacy preserved by the tradition of modern magicians. The pseudonym name Harry Houdini is a reference to his mentor in magic, French magician Robert-Houdin.…
