Van Woodward won the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for History for this work. This copy inscribed by Van Woodward on the front endpaper, "For Mrs. Bland Metts with warm regards C. Vann Woodward April 15, 1981." The recipient, Sally Bland Metts, was one of the descendents of Mary Chesnut and one of the heirs to Chesnut's diary. She is credited both in the acknowledgements section and on the copyright page itself, having providing crucial primary source material to Vann Woodward. A remarkable association copy. A very good copy with foxing to dust jacket and text block edges.
