Ajouter au panierFirst Edition. 304pp. Octavo [24.5 cm] Blue cloth with titles and rules gilt stamped on backstrips. Better than very good. Bookplate on the front pastedown. Volume 14 in the Northwest Historical series. In this biography, Drury attempts to give a voice to a 'pro-white' or 'pro-treaty Indian. Lawyer played a major role in the Nez Perce-U.S. Government negotiations and treaties. He was vilified in the 1850s and '60s, and is still sharply criticized today. As a strong advocate of Whitman, Spalding, and other Protestant missionaries, Drury felt that Lawyer was simply being realistic. Clark & Brunet 74.

Clifford Merrill Drury had a noteworthy career as a pastor, seminary professor, historian, and Navy chaplain. Born on November 7, 1897 in Clinton, Iowa, to William Drury and Charity Mae Dell, Drury was a graduate of Buena Vista College and San Francisco Theological Seminary and earned a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. As a pastor, Drury served in Shanghai, China, and Moscow, Idaho. While in Moscow, Drury's proximity to the Nez Perce Indians sparked an interest in the history of early missionaries in the Pacific Northwest. This interest launched a writing career that culminated in twenty-five books and numerous magazine articles.
