Ajouter au panier"Bound in lightly worn brown textured boards and blind-stamped along the edges of the front and rear boards with a series of rectangular rules. With bright gilt lettering and rules on the spine. Darkened and foxed endpapers and paste-downs. The 191 pages of text are clean and white, while the 36 pages of shell plates are engrave…d on heavier, lightly browned stock, but the plates, all present, are strikingly clear and detailed with one or two plates touched by foxing. A rather remarkable and wonderful early work on conchology which was the precurser to Edgar Allan Poe's The Conchologists First Book published in 1839 with the assistance of Thomas Wyatt and Isaac Lea. Wyatt calls the reader's attention to how the study of shells is important to the then-fledgling science of paleontology (though he lumps it into geology), noting that it is the type of fossil shells present in various sedimentary strata that often help the scientist identify them and mark the boundaries between geologic periods. Composed primarily of tropical shells, this study was based entirely on shells in the author's own collection, though he does draw the reader's attenion to the collection of his future collaborator in the Poe project, Isaac Lea of Philadelphia, noting that Lea was owner of a portion of the late Lamarck's collection of shells. TheConchologists First Bookwas first published in April 1839, with its author being listed as Edgar Allan Poe. However, Poe was a consulting editor of the book and only wrote the Preface and Introduction. According to Poe documentarians Dwight Thomas and David Jackson, Poe credited much of the work to scientist Thomas Wyatt for "his late excellent Manual of Conchology." The book was originally meant to be an accessible and inexpensive abridgment of Wyatts original textbook (259). The work was published under Poes name due to his popularity. It turned out to be the most popular book, in sales, printed under Poes name. The fact that Wyatt asked Poe to accept authorship demonstrates that at least one professional scientist identified Poe as a credible authority on science. Poes interest in seashells was likely inspired by his service in the United States Army along the coastline of Charleston, South Carolina. In Poes Introduction to the book, he explains that the history of the study of mollusks (seashells) went back to the ancient Greeks, noting the descriptions of seashells by Pliny and Aristotle. He documents that there have been significant historical studies of seashells found on board numerous seafaring vessels, on remote South Sea Islands, in West Africa, Chili, and New Holland. He argues that "Few branches of Natural History are of more adventitious importance" than Conchology (PoesComplete Works XIV 98). A notable feature of this book is that it was one of the first popularscientificbooks to include color pages, offering "illustrations of two hundred and fifteen shells, presenting a correct type of each genus" (95).The first edition was so popular that the publishers printed a second one in the same year. The third version was published in 1845 under Wyatts name, but Poes initials were only retained in the Preface (Thomas and Jackson 608). Poes involvement in The Conchologists First Book demonstrates that he was interested in lending his name to a legitimate scientific work. However, it also shows that he was willing to accept authors credit for a work that he did not write.*An excerpt from Murray Ellisons Master of Arts Thesis 2015 First Ediiton with matching dates of 1838 on the title and copyright pages. And no subsequent printings." 1st Edition, With matching dates of 1838 on the title and copyright pages; no subsequent printings.
