One of a series of books on trop;ical agriculture which include books on Rice, Tea, Bananas, Beekeeping in the Tropics, and (later) Spices. This edition takes into account that the crop was beginning to be cultivated intensively; in addition to cultivation, the author discusses production, consumption and marketing of the cocoa bean. New chapters have been added on "The Manuring of Cocoa" and "The Supply of Planting Material". The chapter on Vegetative Propagation has been revised in light of modifications to older methods and the introduction of simpler techniques. Advances in the control of pests and diseases have been considderable and these are described in detail. Recent work on the practical aspects of fermentation and drying have also been incorporated. The chapter in this edition entitled "The Botany of Cocoa" was written by the late Professor R.E.D. Baker. Fully illustrated by photographs, both black and white and (some in) colour.
