Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very good. Etat de la jaquette : very good. First Edition. Octavo, 314pp., illustrated. A very good copy in the publisher's reddish-brown boards with mild edgewear, and foxing to the edges. Internally clean. In a very good dust jacket with some rubbing and short tears, gently sunned on the spine. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by co-author Dick Gregory on the front free endpaper "To Jim." Illegible owner's name on the front paste-down. An interesting copy, which also contains a lengthy inscription on the half-title page from Robert Byron Watson to Dolores French, quoting a verse from Ivan Andreyevich Krylov. Watson was a purported witness to a conversation between two art gallery owners in Atlanta (Harold Eugene Purcell and Jerry Adams), and some of their associates, about a plot to assassinate Martin Luther King, Jr. The conversation took place exactly one week before King's murder in Memphis. The FBI later determined that Watson's story was not credible, though it's worth noting that there remain a number of doubts in certain quarters about whether the convicted assassin, James Earl Ray, was solely responsible for King's murder. Dolores French, the recipient, was a high-profile Atlanta prostitute, who was for a time married to Atlanta civil rights and criminal defence attorney Michael Hauptman. An interesting copy of this deep dive into various alternative theories of the King Assassination, scarce signed by Gregory, and with a most interesting gift inscription from someone connected to the investigation.

Ajouter au panierUncorrected proof. Uncorrected proof. Signed by Dick Gregory on the verso of the front wrap with the inscription, "To You." [iv], 308 pp. Bound in publisher's blue wraps with black tape binding, "Uncorrected Manuscript" written on front wrap in red ink. Very Good, two staples in front wrap (presumably once holding review information),a few nicks to taped spine, occasional proofreaders' notes in black ink and marker (causing bleed-through), with some previous edits photocopied. Quite rare in this format, especially signed. Lawyer and author Mark Lane teamed up with Black comedian and activist Dick Gregory for this critical examination of Martin Luther King's assassination in Memphis in 1968. Gregory's contributions to the book are generally more poetic and personal than Lane's. Some of the editorial deletions and alterations are interesting to students of the MLK case; for instance, on p. 118 a number of Gregory's lines about "a local militant group called the Invaders" are blacked out. A leader of this group (widely believed to be agents provocateur) was Marrell McCollough, a Black undercover police officer infiltrating them who would go on to work for the CIA-- if indeed his service to them had not already started. He would be with King in his final moments, holding towels to King's chest to staunch the bleeding in a famous photo of the scene taken by Joseph Louw. Signed.
