The two primary stylesheet languages are Cascading Style Sheets and the Extensible Stylesheet Language. While they are both called stylesheet languages, they have very different purposes and ways of going about their tasks. CSS is designed around styling a document, structured in a markup language, HTML and XML documents. It was created for that purpose. The code CSS is non-XML syntax to define the style information for the various elements of the document that it styles. The language to structure a document is a prelimit to CSS. A markup language, like HTML and less XUL, may define some primitive elements to style a document, for example >emphasis< to bold. CSS post styles a document to 'screen media' or 'paged media'.

A style sheetlanguage or style language, is a computer language used to describe thepresentation of structured documents. A structured document whichdoesn't break the schema it is designed to conform to is 'well-formed'.A program processing the document must model the schema, and can presentit in different formats, fonts, and order, as well as with othereffects, by using different sets of style rules contained in differentstyle sheets. One modern style sheet language with widespread use isCascading Style Sheets, which is used to style documents written inHTML, XHTML, SVG, XUL, and other markup languages. One of the mostattractive features of structured documents is that the content can bereused in many contexts and presented in various ways. Different stylesheets can be attached to the logical structure to produce differentpresentations.
