BOXED SET: 6.74" x 9.76 x 3.26", 2.26 kg, 597+526 (1123) pp * ABOUT THE BOOKS: These two volumes contain a grand biography, the first to appear in English, of Hector Berlioz, one of the most radical & influential composers of all time, including a scintillating portrait of the artistic & social world in which he moved & a brilliant analysis of each of his major works. For well over 100 years critical judgments regarding Berlioz have been as much opposed as the poles. Was he "a mere scene painter in sounds" or "one of the greatest composers who has ever lived" ? In this brilliant work, Jacques Barzun, distinguished critic, scholar & teacher, demonstrates first that the story of Berlioz' life is the epitome of his age & second that a full view of both Berlioz' public career & his inner life reveals one of the world's rare complete artists. It was Berlioz who created the modern orchestra & some of its most moving music, Berlioz who demonstrated the function of the art of sound in the modern world. But these two volumes are not merely for the student character or the lover of music; any reader who is interested in history or in art will find in them a man who, like Leonardo, "transcended as well as embodied his time." * From the AUTHOR'S NOTE: "The reader [may] carve from these pages several different books: the life of a man who was at once artist, thinker, & doer; a concert or record guide to twelve great works increasingly valued by connoisseurs; an essay on aesthetics; an account of nineteenth century culture; &, I dare say, a tract for our times as well. . . . To learn a creator's ways, come to see through his eyes, & discover how past & current achievements affected his gifts in the making of great new work is the business of the historical critic; to generalize & show by a massive instance how in a given age great work gets accomplished, fought over, & slowly assimilated is the business of the cultural historian. It is as an artisan in both kinds that I have tried to present Berlioz in the century of Romanticism." -Jacques Barzun * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: JACQUES BARZUN (1907-2012) arrived in the United States in his youth & established a career spanning seventy years as a preeminent academic & historian (Columbia University) & as a brilliant & prolific writer (c. 40 books & 10 volumes of translations). Among his more recent books is "From Dawn to Decadence: 500 years of Western Cultural Life" (2000). * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE wraps, labels & custom-packages this 2-vol. set w/ our greatest elegance & care for prompt secure FREE shipment to all domestic destinations via USPS MEDIA MAIL or via USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost fee of $14.00 w/ below-cost charges for international shipments via Mandatory USPS PRIORITY INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL quoted on request.
