Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) was the second of the NASA 'Great Observatories' to be launched to space, following the Hubble Space Telescope. CGRO was named after Dr. Arthur Holly Compton (Washington University in St. Louis), Nobel prize winner, for work involved with gamma ray physics. CGRO was built by TRW (now Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems) in Redondo Beach, CA. Following 14 years of effort, the observatory was launched on the Space Shuttle Atlantis, mission STS-37, on 5 April 1991 and operated until its deorbit on 4 June 2000. It was deployed in low earth orbit at 450 km (280 miles) to avoid the Van Allen radiation belt. It was the heaviest astrophysical payload ever flown at that time at 17,000 kilograms (37,000 lb). 108 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) are bursts of gamma rays in the earth's atmosphere. TGFs have been recorded to last 0.2 to 3.5 milliseconds, and have energies of up to 20 MeV. They are probably caused by electric fields produced above thunderstorms. Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes were first discovered in 1994 by BATSE, or Burst and Transient Source Experiment, on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory, a NASA spacecraft (Fishman et al. 1994). A subsequent study from Stanford University in 1996 linked a TGF to an individual lightning strike occurring within a few ms of the TGF. BATSE detected only a small number of TGF events in nine years, due to its having been constructed to study gamma rays from outer space, which last much longer.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articlesavailable from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Gamma-rayburst Coordinates Network (GCN) is a system that distributes informationabout the location of a Gamma-ray burst (GRB), called Notices, when aburst is detected by various spacecraft. The GCN also automaticallyreceives and distributes messages, called Circulars, about follow-upobservations to interested individuals and institutions. Follow-upobservations may be made by ground-based and space-based optical, radioand X-ray observatories.…
