Ajouter au panierFirst edition, first impression, annotated by Leech with editorial revisions in red ink and accompanied by both the proof dust jacket and the final jacket. One of the first books to focus on computational group theory, it comprises articles on how computers may be utilized in the field of abstract algebra. Leech (1926-1992) was a mathematician who worked for Ferranti on the construction of early computers. In 1968, he was appointed the first Head of Computing Science at the newly opened University of Stirling and was promoted to a Personal Chair two years later. He was married to Jenifer Haselgrove (1930-2015), a pioneer of radio science who developed techniques using the Cambridge EDSAC computer to study rays. In the margins, Leech has made occasional proofing marks and corrections to both text and formulas. Laid in is a typed slip from the University of Stirling's library requesting books for a 1974 exhibition of faculty work: "books with dust jackets would be particularly welcome". On the slip verso, Leech has written his name, department, and the note "TWO dust jackets - one with book + one advertising version. Please return both." Leech has annotated the final jacket as the "corrected copy" on the front panel and made corrections to the rear panel, both in red ink. As there was no second edition, neither these nor Leech's textual amendments were ever made. Octavo. Numerous diagrams within text. Original red morocco-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With two dust jackets, one as issued and one proof version. Corners gently bumped, cloth clean; jackets lightly soiled and toned, extremities a little shelf-worn, both without printed price, as issued, the proof jacket with date of publication stamp and price sticker to verso of front flap: a near-fine copy with very good jackets.
