2 parts (of 4?) Large 8°, original printed wrappers: Capitulo III in yellow (splitting at spine), Capitulo IV in pink (faded). Uncut and partly unopened. Edges curling. Overall in good to very good condition. Capitulo III: pp. [59]-138 (quires signed 6-10); Capitulo IV: pp. [139]-169 (quires signed 11-12). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION, capitulos III-IV only of a work issued in parts and apparently left incomplete. Innocêncio, giving a collation of 169 pages, notes that the work was attributed to Silva Mendes Leal Junior, although he did not know on whose authority, and that while its prospectus stated it would run to ten chapters (400-500 pages), he wasn't aware that more than the first four capitulos had been published.João Carlos Saldanha de Oliveira Daun, Duque de Saldanha (1790-1876) was marshal of the liberal armies fighting for D. Maria II, who raised him to the rank of conde (1833), marquês (1834), and finally duque (1846). He was also one of the dominant personalities in Portuguese politics of his era, serving four times as president of the Council of Ministers and leading half a dozen coups d'état. In 1849 he was succeeded as president of the Council of Ministers (prime minister) by António Bernardo da Costa Cabral, first count and later first Marquês de Thomar (or Tomar). Costa Cabral, who was both admired and feared, had fled to England after the Maria da Fonte movement in 1846, but was restored to power in 1849, then replaced by the Duque de Saldanha in 1851. These two capitulos cover the years 1846-1847, with the author favoring the Conde de Thomar.José da Silva Mendes Leal Júnior, politician, diplomat, author, translator and journalist (Lisbon, 1818-Sintra, 1886), was the son of a music teacher and pianist of the same name. His vast bibliography includes works of poetry, fiction, theater, history and biography. He served as Minister of Marine in the cabinet of the Duque de Loulé in 1862. In 1869 he served briefly as President of the lower house of the Côrtes. During 1869-1870, again under the Duque de Loulé, he was Foreign Minister. Abandoning his political career for the diplomatic service, Mendes Leal was Portuguese Minister at Madrid (1871-1874), and Paris (1874-1883), returning to Madrid (1883-1886).*** Innocêncio III, 343 and V, 132: lists this title under the Duque de Saldanha but notes that it has been attributed to José da Silva Mendes Leal Junior; on that author, see V, 127-133. Porbase locates seven copies in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, giving the collation as 169, (1) pp. Not located in Jisc.
