Dark orange cloth, spine titled in gilt. Slight browning to end-papers but very good. Lacks dust-wrapper. These memoirs form a detailed record of men of leisure shooting enormous numbers of a wide range of species including coot and sandpiper. This is not the world of MacKenzie Thorpe. The book, in fact, concludes with a 1951coot shoot with King George at Hickling, where "the total bag amounted to 961 coot, four mallard, one teal, four tufted and four golden eye. It is perhaps fitting that these memoirs, covering just over fifty years, should end at this juncture, for it was due in no small measure to a conversation which I had with His Majesty on this day that I started to compile them. Although the majority of the days recorded naturally concern Norfolk, justly famous for the numbers and variety of its wildfowl, I have endeavoured to give a fairly wide survey of inland wildfowling during the first half of the twentieth century in many parts of the British Isles." Peter Scott has a cameo role as one of the author's pre-war shooting companions, and as such stands as a link to all that subsequently took place with wildfowl in East Anglia. .
