With an introduction and notes by Van Gulik. Published in an edition of 1200 numbered copies signed by Van Gulik. This is copy 888. A presentation copy inscribed by van Gulik to legendary author and literary critic, Vincent Starrett, on the front free endpaper: "To Mr. Vincent Starrett, / from the author / R van Gulik / Tokyo, Sept. 1950." Starrett has also signed this copy on the verso of the limitation page. Fine bright copy with the original plain kraft paper unprinted dust jacket in which the book was mailed to subscribers, and housed in a custom made clamshell case with a red leather label on the spine and titles stamped in gilt. Laid-in to this copy are photocopies of two autograph letters signed by van Gulik to Starrett, as well as a newspaper clipping of Starrett's review of this book that is dated Dec. 10, 1950.

Gedrukt in een oplage van 1200 genummerde en gesigneerde exemplaren. 1e druk. Flinke schaafplekken aan de band, met name op de knepen en onder- en bovenaan de rug. Middelste pagina's (vouwblad; p. (9-10)-i-ii) van de eerste kneep los. Dit zeer decoratieve boek, Dee Goong An, was de aanzet tot Van Guliks succesvolle romanreeks met Judge Dee / Rechter Tie in de hoofdrol, een Chinese magistraat uit de 7e eeuw. Het boek gaat gekleed in een originele kleurenhoutsnede in Chinese stijl naar ontwerp van Van Gulik, van negen verschillende blokken gedrukt. Het is een illustratie van p. 197 in het boek. Op de achterkant een tekst in vijf Chinese karakters die wordt uitgelegd in Van Guliks voorwoord. De rug is nogal versleten. Ook met een uitvoerig voorwoord van de vertaler/ bewerker Robert van Gulik) en een dramatis personae voor de drie door Judge Dee opgeloste moordzaken in dit boek. Afkomstig uit de boekerij van kalli- en typograaf Ben Aalbers. Een legendarisch boek in de detective-literatuur!
