Première édition en français, la traduction est de Jean Le Blond, poète normand. L'ouvrage a été publié pour la première fois, en latin, à Louvain en 1516. La traduction anglaise n'a parue qu'un an après cette édition française. Illustré par 12 bois gravés à mi-page, certains répétés, qui ont été gravés pour cet ouvrage. On y trouve une figure de l'auteur en train d'écrire, un chien couché à ses pieds. En tête on trouve un épître de Guillaume Budé. Thomas More (1478-1535), le plus illustre représentant anglais de l'humanisme, refusa de reconnaitre la souveraineté du roi d'Angleterre sur l'Eglise. Il fut convaincu de haute-trahison et exécuté.
