"The author had planned to reprint his Lecons de physique (1767) with some additions but found so many changes were necessary that a new work was needed. The present work, designed to accompany his Description et usage d'un cabinet de physique experimentale (1775), follows the arrangement of that work. Extensive notes, both mathematical and for applications to chemistry and natural history are found at the end of each volume. / Some of the topics of chemical interest are: vol. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt-stamped with calf gilt-stamped labels; occasional toning, scattered minor spotting. Very good. Second edition, revised and enlarged, by Urbain Francois Roulaud, professor of physics and demonstrator at the University of Paris, also the nephew of Sigaud de Lafond. This work on laboratory equipment and technique was originally issued in 1775. This new edition notably depicts two plates (volume I, plates IXbis and XIbis) illustrating a machine by George Atwood (1745-1807), FRS, a pump by Hesse and the hydraulic machine invented by Vera, whose purpose, clearly pedagogical, is to show experimentally and support Isaac Newton's laws of motion. / His numerous teaching experiments delved into many areas: electricity, chemistry, phosphorus, the recipe for toothpaste, medical uses, heat, distillation, precipitation, acoustics, air pressure, electricity, pumps, the inclined plane, the crane, centrifugal force, gravity, etc. / The plate XIII, for example, Tome 2: "in which a bird is placed under a bell jar and the air is evacuated with an air pump. This demonstrates the importance of air for breathing. The text describes how the bird first finds it difficult to breathe, then convulses, and finally perishes." [History of Science Museum, Oxford]. / Sigaud de la Fond, an obstetrician, studied under and succeeded the Abbe Nollet at the College Louis-le-Granc, taught courses of anatomy, physiology, and experimental physics. In 1795, he became a professor of physics and chemistry at the Ecole Centrale. REFERENCE: DSB, XII, p. 428.

Original mottled calf, gilt-decorated spine, gilt leather spine labels, raised bands; rubbed. Very good. First edition. "Sigaud de Lafond was a French obstetrician and physicist and a devoted student of Jean-Antoine Nollet, who he succeeded as chair of experimental physics at the College Louis le Grand. "Sigaud was a prolific writer in the fields of experimental physics, chemistry, medicine, and (apparently as a consequence of his early Jesuit training) theology. Experimental science was a fashionable pursuit among the leisured classes in eighteenth-century France, and Sigaud was one of several illustrious popularizers who satisfied the intellectual appetites and curiosities of an ever increasing number of amateurs of science. Popular interest tended toward the more spectacular examples of natural phenomena; and lectures accompanied by demonstrations, especially on electricity and on the newly discovered gases, always attracted large and enthusiastic crowds. As a follower of the Abbe Nollet, Sigaud was apparently quite successful in appealing to this group of virtuosi, and most of his publications were written for the enlightened layman rather than the professional researcher. As a result, his work was generally not profound, creative, or original. He avoided theoretical explanations and instead emphasized phenomenological aspects. There is something, too, in his writing of the vulgar catering to the "gout des merveilles" - the popular fascination with the strange, the unusual, the bizarre."
