Desertification, the subject of a global conference to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 29 August to 9 September, 1977, seemed to demand a different approach, one that would cover the subject while at the same time organizing it. The General Assembly had charged the Conference Secretariat with the task of assessing all available data and information on desertification and its consequences on the development process of the countries affected. In carrying out this directive, the Secretariat encountered a curious situation. The causes of desertification are understood, it was unanimously agreed by the expert consultants to the Conference, and the techniques for arresting the process are known. Yet this knowledge is fragmented among a variety of other disciplines-climatology, agronomy, range management, veterinary science, geography, ecology, biology-among whose practitioners the Secretariat had sought -guidance. As an attempt was made to organize the subject of desertification, it seemed to fall naturally under four headings-climate, ecological change, technology (embracing the techniques for combating the process), and its social and behavioural aspects. These components of the subject gave rise to the notion that it would best be covered by four fairly extended studies, which we called Component Reviews, rather than the long set of briefer papers characteristic of world conferences. At the same time, and because the Component Reviews would be somewhat technical and sectoral in character, it was decided that the four reviews would be summed up in an easily readable, integrated exposition which we would title an Overview. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 272 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | This book contains a selection of papers presented at the Advanced Research Workshop on ¿The Socio-economic causes and consequences of desertification in Central Asiä held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in June 2006. The meeting provided a forum for twenty-six scientists from Central Asia and NATO countries to discuss the human dimensions of the desertifi- tion process. Papers presented to the meeting examined recent scientific evidence on the impact of desertification on livestock production, public health, and biodiversity, and contributed to the formulation of coh- ent national and regional policies for the management of watersheds, rangelands, and irrigated agriculture. The meeting was co-directed by Roy Behnke of the Macaulay Institute, UK, and by Lapas Alibekov of the Samarkand State University, Uzbekistan. Both the workshop and this subsequent publication have been financed by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division and we gratefully acknowledge this support. The Bishkek meeting was ably hosted by the Kyrgyz Sheep Breeders Association under the dir- tion of Akylbek Rakaev who contributed substantially to the successful running of the workshop. Deliberations at the workshop emphasized that policy failures at national level had promoted desertification within the region.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Desertification threatens different areas of the planet, from the Aral Sea to the Amazon, across all five continents. 6,000 years ago, the Sahara desert, now the largest desert in the world, was grassland covered with vegetation. The oscillations of the Earth's axis turned this area of the planet from an orchard to a sandy area where almost nothing can grow. In that case, we speak of a process of natural desertification which is in contrast to what is happening currently: large areas of the planet are being desertified at an accelerated rate as a result of human activity and climate change. Desertification is the process by which vegetation in drylands i.e. arid and semi-arid lands, such as grasslands or shrublands, decreases and eventually disappears. The concept does not refer to the physical expansion of existing deserts, but to the various processes that threaten to turn currently non-desert ecosystems into deserts. Human activities, including deforestation and the overexploitation of aquifers, accelerate desertification. The effects of climate change, which is also driven by humans, and the destruction it causes in the form of extreme weather phenomena such as droughts. 240 pp. Englisch.
