Spine cloth is slightly faded but the gilt lettering is bright (gilt signifies the first edition as opposed to black lettering). Top corners are lightly bumped and there is a <1/2 inch scrape at top rear board. Spline has a forward slant. There is a separation after the contents page, and one at beginning of the second title, but internal binding is solid and there are no loose or loosening pages. Pages are mildly toned but otherwise clean. Also included is a review pamphlet of "Paleface" by the same author.

This copy was owned by Laughlin as a strudent at Harvard with his ownership stamp lower right ffe: James Laughlin Eliot House Cambridge Mass> Solid copy, lacking dustjacket, Orange cloth lightly stained (not affecting internals), spine sunned.

Slightly spotted to the edges, the upper board splashed at its lower corner, the lower board somewhat scratched and creased to the cloth, the boards moderately bumped to the corners and with a short, superficial split at the lower joint, the front pastedown scuffed presumably from a bookplate removal, the rear free endpaper with a neat 'B' or '13' in red pencil, and the prelims/outer leaves spotted, but probably presenting better than it sounds.
