The Diary of Samuel Pepys offers a vivid and personal account of life in 17th-century London, documenting events such as the Great Plague, the Great Fire, and the Restoration of Charles II, alongside the author's everyday observations on politics, society, and personal affairs. This edition, transcribed from the shorthand manuscript by Rev. Mynors Bright and edited by Henry B. Wheatley, remains a benchmark in Pepys scholarship, combining comprehensive annotation with an accessible format. The Diary of Samuel Pepys, M.A., F.R.S.; Clerk of the Acts and Secretary to the Admiralty. Transcribed by the Late Rev. Mynors Bright, M.A. from the Shorthand Manuscript in the Pepysian Library, Magdalene College Cambridge. Edited with Additions by Henry B. Wheatley, F.S.A. Bound in 3 books, complete; Vols. I-III; 1659-1663; Vols IV-VI; 1664-1667; Vols. VII-VIII; 1667-1669 + Index. Published by G. Bell and Sons Ltd, London and New York, 1928. Printed in Great Britain by William Clowes. First published between 1893 and 1899, it was then reissued in 8 volumes in 1904, and this India Paper edition was first issued in 1923. This 1928 copy is a reprint of the 1923 printing. A very good hardback set of this classic work. Rebound securely in modern blue cloth, sunned to a lilac colour on spine. The use of India paper makes it possible for each volume to have many hundreds of pages, and reproduce the diaries in a convenient form for readers. The text is very good throughout - bright and clean with only occasional light usage mark or page crease. Some finger marks to text block edges and with gilt top edge. Volume I with tissue guarded portrait frontispiece in lovely condition. Text in English. Vols. I-III; 1659-1663; lix + 342pp + 407pp + 371pp; Vols IV-VI; 1664-1667; (iv) + 424pp + 424pp + 385pp; Vols. VII-VIII; 1667-1669 + Index; (iv) + 387pp + 313pp + (1) + 315-514pp Index.
