Both front and rear boards, and front and rear endpapers, of both volumes are detached, but included. Normal wear and aging (particularly to extremities), chipping to spine, and some creasing to text block, all as pictured. Title page of volume 1 starting to detach at head, as pictured. Armorial bookplate on front board of volume 1 (Sir George Stewart of Grandtully Bart.). The final folio edition with any contribution from Johnson, considered the best edition and the most important edition following the first. The fourth edition was the first to include Johnson's advertisement: "Perfection is unattainable, but nearer and nearer approaches may be made; and finding my Dictionary about to be reprinted, I have endeavoured, by a revisal, to make it less reprehensible." This work, according to Noah Webster, "had, in philology, the effect which Newton's discoveries had in mathematics." One of just (approx., according to Fleeman) 1,250 copies, this is a serious achievement in lexicography, and a fine addition to the collection of any lover of the English language. HARWOOD-16.

It includes a four page list of 290 subscribers. A second issue of this edition was published in 1777. Fleeman notes that 'the variety of signatures and the occasional presence of press-figures (relatively uncommon in Irish books), suggest that the work was produced simultaneously in parts by different printers'.
