Because of the increasing attention now being paid to theoretical and experimental aspects of the phenomena encountered, a symposium focusing particularly on dielectric behavior was held at the l6lst National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Los Angeles, California, March, 1971. The authoritative papers in this volume were all presented at this symposium, which was sponsored by the Polymer Division of the American Chemical Society. An obvious advantage of such a collection is that it keep~ together closely related material which would otherwise tend to be dispersed amongst different journals; a further factor of which most authors represented here have taken advantage is that it gives an opportunity to present research in less attenuated form than is now normally possible in journals. I wish to thank all the authors for their uniformly excellent contributions and for their cooperation in the publication of this volume. Thanks are also due to Dr. S. Due to existence of large anisotropy coupled with the collective molecular reorientation, the impact of liquid crystalline materials on the modern day science, technology, industry, engineering, biology and medicine has been very profound. The interest and activities in this fascinating field are undergoing a modern day renaissance. Recently, work in the area of science and technology of LC materials have preceded mainly in two directions: to synthesize new LC materials with specific characteristics appropriate for applications and to make composite systems by the dispersion/doping of non-mesogenic materials (dyes/polymers/nanomaterials) into the host LC matrix and tailor their properties suitable for the applications. The work described in this monograph presents investigations on the dielectric and electro-optical properties of pure and non-mesogenic materials dispersed in host LC systems and study of their basic and applied aspects. Some of the future challenges and problems which are to be addressed and explored are also pointed out.…
