Excellent condition.Francis Grose (b. before 11 June 1731 and#8211; 12 June 1791) was an English antiquary, draughtsman, and lexicographer. He was born at his father's house in Broad Street, St-Peter-le-Poer, London. The eldest of seven children, Francis probably received a classical education but first aimed at a career in the Army. In 1747 he was in Flanders, apparently as a volunteer in Howard's (later 19th) regiment of foot: later he received a commission as cornet in Cobham's (later 10th) regiment of dragoons. Posted to Kent on excise duties in 1750 he met and married Catherine Jordan of Canterbury. They were eventually to have ten children, six of whom survived to adulthood. Grose had early shown a keen interest in drawing, having attempted sketches of medieval buildings as far back as 1749, and having taken formal instruction at a drawing school in the mid-1750s. He exhibited, first at the Society of Artists in 1767and#8211;8 and then at the Royal Academy. Dirleton Castleis a medieval fortress in the village of Dirleton, East LothianScotland. It lies around 2 miles (3….2 km) west of North Berwick, andaround 19 miles (31 km) east of Edinburgh. The oldest parts of thecastle date to the 13th century, and it was abandoned by the end of the17th century. Begun in around 1240 by John De Vaux, the castle washeavily damaged during the Wars of Scottish Independence, when it wastwice taken by the English. In the 14th century, Dirleton was repairedby the Haliburton family, and it was acquired by the Ruthvens in 1505.The Ruthvens were involved in several plots against Mary, Queen of Scotsand King James VI, and eventually forfeited the castle in 1600. Dirletonceased to be a residence, although Oliver Cromwell was forced to besiegethe castle to flush out a band of mosstroopers, during the Third EnglishCivil War in 1650.
