Leather spine chipped and worn, still attached to pages. Housed in a custom-made clamshell box. The title page is missing, as are all preliminary pages…. The first page present is page number 1, the first page of the essay. The missing pages at the front are: the title page; 4 page 'To the Reader' by John Sherman; 3 page 'To the Reader' by Increase Mather; 2 page table of contents. All are provided in computer-printout facsimile. Pages numbered 1-143 (121-124 sprung, but set in place). Following page 143, there are 3 blank pages, on one of which is written, "Asa Bouker, his book." And beneath that, in another hand, "Josiah Flagg, his book, given to him by Mrs. Lowe, the Widow of Edward Lowe of Leominster." A separate title page for the first sermon: Heaven's Alarm to the World, or A Sermon wherein is shewed that Fearful Sights and Signs in Heaven are the Presages of great Calamities at hand, preached at the Lecture of Boston in New England, January 20, 1680. By Mr. Increase Mather. The Second Impression. Boston in New England. Printed by Samuel Sewell 1682. Title page. 6 page 'To the Reader.' Sermon paginated 1-38. Title page and first page of the To the Reader are missing chips from the outer margin & also a bit of text there. A separate title page for the second sermon: The Latter Sign Discoursed of in a Sermon preached at the Lecture of Boston in New England. August 31, 1682. Wherein is shewed that the Voice of God is Signal Providences, especially when repeated and iterated, ought to be hearkened unto. By Increase Mather. Title page is neatly sewn together to remedy a long vertical tear. Pages numbered 1-27. There should be 32 pages. The missing 5 pages are provided in computer-printout facsimile (from the copy in Harvard's library). There is some insect damage to the upper margin of the final few pages. Overall, pages toned, with some stains and wrinkles, but still bound together. Measures 3.75 x 5.75 inches. The ownership names between the first work and the second are not dated. Josiah Flagg may have been the father of Josiah Flagg, Jr. who is regarded as the first American dentist. The elder Flagg was married to Elizabeth (Hawkes) Flagg. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War as well as a jeweler and an associate of Paul Revere, with whom he published a book of Psalm Tunes in 1764. If that is the correct Flagg, we are still about 75 years after the publication of this book. The other name is Asa Bouker. Various online genealogy sites have offered up several Boukers. There was an Asa Bouker born in Marlborough, MA in 1691. He served in various public offices in early Shrewsbury, MA in the 1730's. A snapshot of the American Colonies at the time of publication of this book is hazy indeed. Boston itself, where this book was published, had only about 5,000 residents. The first Boston coffee shop opened in 1674. The original Massachusetts bay Colony Charter, originally granted to the Pilgrims in the 1620s was still in effect. It would be revoked in 1684. The Salem Witch Trials (in which Increase Mather and Samuel Sewell (who printed this book) would participate) had not yet occurred. Neither Washington nor Franklin nor George III (or even George II) had been born. In 1680, the Great Comet, also called Kirch's Comet blazed into the sky. It was the first comet discovered with the use of a telescope, but more importantly, it grew so bright, during the winter of 1680-1681 that it could be see even in the daytime. Mather was interested in the comet as a scientific phenomenon, but he also used it as a metaphoric (or perhaps a literal) message from God.
