A Distributedoperating system is the logical aggregation of operating system softwareover a collection of independ…ent, networked, communicating, andspatially disseminated computational nodes. Individual system nodes eachhold a discrete software subset of the global aggregate operatingsystem. Each node-level software subset is a composition of two distinctprovisioners of services. The first is a ubiquitous minimal kernel, ormicrokernel, situated directly above each node's hardware. Themicrokernel provides only the necessary mechanisms for a node'sfunctionality. Second is a higher-level collection of system managementcomponents, providing all necessary policies for a node's individual andcollaborative activities. This collection of management componentsexists immediately above the microkernel, and below any userapplications or APIs that might reside at higher levels.
