Created in Amsterdam in December 1973 by American artist Paul Thek and Dutch photographer and designer Edwin Klein, Document 2 and Document 3 follow the pair's first collaborative work, Document 1, which was jointly published by the Stedelijk Museum and the Moderna Museet in 1969. In Document 2 and 3 two hardcover volumes; one in black and white, the other in color - Klein photographs the results of Thek's efforts to turn his personal notebooks into works of art. Thek s diaries are full of philosophical musings, poems, sketches and watercolors, becoming conceptual still lives as he strews old photographs, crystals, fruit peels and other objects across and around the pages. In the second half of Document 3, Thek s experiments become more intrusive, and he ultimately sets the notebook on fire. Document 2 and 3 were not seen by the public until Janos Gat Gallery in New York published this boxed, numbered edition of 350 copies, signed by Klein, as its first multiple. Each book includes a foreword by art critic Gary Indiana and contributions by Toni Brunink and Aart Klein. The publication was accompanied by an exhibition of unique prints, on view from April 19th to September 24th, 2005. Signed by Author(s).

Prima edizione (First Edition). . During the 1960's and early 70's, the maverick American artist Paul Thek (1933-88) and a group of friends worked collaboratively in Europe, calling themselves the Artist's Co-op. They were invited to produce installations, including one at Documenta 5, and moved from gig to gig like a rock group, sharing expenses, sleeping bags, drugs and ideas, often camping out in museums as they assembled multimedia environments of fabulous beauty from their individual work and everyday things: newspapers, vegetables, bathroom tissues. Art and lifestyle were one thing. Janos Gat has a modest souvenir of such collaborations in a series of photographs made by Thek and the artist Edwin Klein in 1969 as they prepared for an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The pictures are basically still lifes of random objects -- ''whatever was lying around" Mr. Klein recalls in a terrific little catalog -- arranged on a double page of The International Herald Tribune. The contents include museum postcards, pornographic magazines, Polaroids of the artists at work, mushrooms, cigarette butts, hyacinth blossoms, wine bottles. From picture to picture, things high and low come and go; narratives, psychological and social, unfold. The results provide an entrancing flashback to Thek's still undervalued career. It is also a reminder that the model of collective art-making is very much of the moment (Holland Cotter).Durante gli anni '60 e i primi anni '70, l'artista americano Paul Thek (1933-88) fu attivo insieme ad un gruppo di amici in Europa. Si definirono "The Artist's Co-op". - Neuwertig. - Large format artists' book, which contains photo-collages of newspaper articles, and b/w photos by Wim Davits, Edwin Klein, Tom Lenders, Max Natkiel and Jean-Paul Vroom.
