During the 1960's and early 70's, the maverick American artist Paul Thek (1933-88) and a group of friends worked collaboratively in Europe, calling themselves the Artist's Co-op. They were invited to produce installations, including one at Documenta 5, and moved from gig to gig like a rock group, sharing expenses, sleeping bags, drugs and ideas, often camping out in museums as they assembled multimedia environments of fabulous beauty from their individual work and everyday things: newspapers, vegetables, bathroom tissues. Art and lifestyle were one thing. Janos Gat has a modest souvenir of such collaborations in a series of photographs made by Thek and the artist Edwin Klein in 1969 as they prepared for an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The pictures are basically still lifes of random objects -- ''whatever was lying around" Mr. Klein recalls in a terrific little catalog -- arranged on a double page of The International Herald Tribune. The contents include museum postcards, pornographic magazines, Polaroids of the artists at work, mushrooms, cigarette butts, hyacinth blossoms, wine bottles. From picture to picture, things high and low come and go; narratives, psychological and social, unfold. The results provide an entrancing flashback to Thek's still undervalued career. It is also a reminder that the model of collective art-making is very much of the moment (Holland Cotter).Durante gli anni '60 e i primi anni '70, l'artista americano Paul Thek (1933-88) fu attivo insieme ad un gruppo di amici in Europa. Il volume contiene una serie di fotografie realizzate da Thek e dall'artista Edwin Klein nel 1969 mentre preparavano una mostra allo Stedelijk Museum di Amsterdam. Le immagini sono fondamentalmente nature morte di oggetti casuali - ''qualsiasi cosa fosse in giro'', ricorda Klein in un piccolo fantastico catalogo - una doppia pagina del The International Herald Tribune. I contenuti includono cartoline del museo, riviste pornografiche, polaroid degli artisti al lavoro, funghi, mozziconi di sigarette, fiori di giacinto, bottiglie di vino. Di foto in foto le cose "alte" si mischiano a quelle "basse" e si succedono varie narrazioni, psicologiche e sociali. Il libro è anche un validissimo esempio di creazione artistica collettiva.
