In the 1980s thetelecommunications industry expected that digital services would followmuch the same pattern as voice services did on the public switchedtelephone network, and conceived a grandiose end-to-end circuit switchedservices, known as Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network(B-ISDN). This was designed in the 1990s as a logical extension of theend-to-end circuit switched data service, Integrated Services DigitalNetwork (ISDN). Before B-ISDN, the original ISDN attempted to substitutethe analog telephone system with a digital ISDN system which wasappropriate for both voice and non voice traffic. Obtaining worldwideagreement on the Basic rate interface standard was expected to lead to alarge user demand for ISDN equipment, hence leading to mass productionand inexpensive ISDN chips. However, the standardization process tookyears and the technology in this area moved rapidly and, once thestandard was finally agreed upon became obsolete.…

Dynamic synchronous transfer mode (DTM) is an optical networking technology standardized by ETSI in specification ETSI ES 201 803-1. DTM is a time division multiplexing and a circuit-switching network technology that combines switching and transport.[1] It is designed to provide a guaranteed quality of service (QoS) for the emerging class of streaming video services, but can be used for packet-based services as well. It has its most use in professional media networks, mobile TV networks, digital terrestrial television (DTT) networks, in content delivery networks and in consumer oriented networks, such as 'triple play' networks.…

Professionalvideo over IP systems use some existing standard video codec to reducethe program material to a bitstream (e.g., an MPEG transport stream)and then to use an Internet Protocol (IP) network to carry thatbitstream encapsulated in a stream of IP packets. This is typicallyaccomplished using some variant of the RTP protocol. Carryingprofessional video over IP networks has special challenges compared tomost non-time-critical IP traffic. Many of these problems are similar tothose encountered in voice over IP, but to a much higher level ofengineering requirements. In particular, there are very strict qualityof service requirements which must be fulfilled for use in professionalbroadcast environments.…
