Semi-stiff hand-made paper covers, titled and with a drawing of a fox in red, and with an embossed portrait of an eagle. Edges uncut. A near fine copy. One of the earliest and one of the finest books from this extraordinary private press. ("These two fables are a warning to us not to deal with hardly or injuriously by somebody who can defend himself by dealing hardly or injuriously by us. There are many less subtle and imperious creatures which we can eat in peace, and to the glory of God.").

First edition. Quarto. 36 pages. Seven full-page illustrations by Franciszka Themerson, the co-founder of the Gaberbocchus Press. Printed in red and black, this being the second production of the press and one of only two to be hand-printed. Card wrappers with fold-over paper covers in the French style, the cover design incorporating the embossed figure of a woman with an eagle's head.Number 4 of 400 copies numbered and signed by Themerson and with the ''counterfeit signature of Aesop''. Next to her signature the artist has sketched a small self-portrait.Front cover very slightly marked. Inside the covers the glue used in producing the book has cause some staining. Very good indeed.

Copy #249 of 400 printed on a hand press and illustrated by Franciszka Themerson, SIGNED by her with an ORIGINAL SELF-PORTRAIT. Also with a spurious signature of Aesop. Laid in is a compliments slip with the handwritten note by Themerson: "one of the very last copies/sorry it's rather dirty." Very mild soiling to covers. Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper.
