Neat address label on verso of title. Dimensions: Photographs on plates. 224 pages. 15.2 x 1.8 x 24.1 cmReaders of this Author's Eighth Army's Greatest Victories (shortly to appear as a Penguin paperback) will welcome this latest work covering the difficult early period of what was to become one of the most illustrious formations in British military history. Born from the Western Desert force, the Eighth Army was beset with command, equipment and morale problems before it emerged to enjoy glory. The book recounts the events of the first year of Eighth Army's existence when it enjoyed the advantages of superior numbers, superior tanks (contrary to legend), superior Intelligence and the support of a more effective air force. Despite these benefits and the undoubted valour of its soldiers, however, it suffered a series of defeats or, even more disheartening, successes which brought no lasting benefit. The book describes these events and explains the reasons with authority. Size: 8vo.

Ajouter au panierCloth. Etat : Mint. Etat de la jaquette : Mint. First Edition. Today the Eighth Army is deservedly regarded as one of the great military formations in British history. Indeed its name evokes national pride and immediately recalls the victories it enjoyed from El Alamein through to Tunis, and later in Sicily and Italy. As Adrian Stewart reveals in this account, the early history of the Desert Rats was by no means so glorious or successful. Through careful examination of the plentiful evidence, much provided by those who personally fought in North Africa, he analyses the reasons for the near catastrophic reverses in the days before Montgomery. His conclusion is that, far from being due to any lack of resolve or courage on the part of its soldiers or inadequacies of equipment, it was the failure of British generalship, particularly that of General Sir Claude Auchinleck, the Commander-in-Chief Middle East, that proved so damaging. Held in genuinely high regard for his fine qualities, The Auk found himself ill-fitted for the demands of mobile armoured warfare, and often unable to select the right subordinates. It was doubly unfortunate that he and Eighth Army faced the able and charismatic Erwin Rommel. This copy is in MINT condition in a MINT unclipped dustwrapper. Ref C3.

In 1941 and 1942, the Eighth Army -- one of Britain's most illustrious military units -- experienced its baptism of fire while going head to head with the legendary Erwin Rommel and his German Afrika Korps in the desert of northern Africa. After modest success during Operation Crusader in November 1941, the Eighth Army found itself battered and driven back for much of the following year as the Germans scored victory after victory. Not until the summer of 1942, when Gen. Bernard Montgomery assumed command, did the Eighth Army's fortunes begin to reverse.
