Borgese è uno di quei libri di critica che tutti gli studiosi conoscono, che tutte le storie letterarie citano ampiamente, ma che nessuno legge. Dal 1923, data della sua prima edizione, pubblicata dalla casa editrice dei Fratelli Treves di Milano, non è mai più stato ristampato. Il destino di questo libro è simile a quello del suo autore: Borgese è uno dei grandi autori dimenticati del Novecento italiano. Eppure Tempo di edificare non era per Borgese meno importante di Rubè, la fortunata prova narrativa pubblicata nel 1921. Essi costituiscono i principali pilastri della sua volontà di edificare la nuova casa del romanzo italiano. Borgese è per «l'opera», mentre il suo tempo - siamo agli inizi degli anni '20 - non si è ancora liberato del tutto dal raffinato quanto sterile commercio con il frammento, con la notazione in margine, con la bella pagina, con una lirica crepuscolare e infantile. Invece di strutture progettate da architetti consumati ed erette in piena regola da squadre di muratori ben organizzate, il paesaggio letterario italiano, agli occhi dell'autore di Tempo di edificare, è ancora un succedersi di terrains vagues, di palazzi rasi al suolo, dove spuntano «torsi a serie» e «ruderi preventivi». Insomma, frammentisti, lirici, rondisti, critici dal respiro corto per i quali la stroncatura era diventata una seconda natura, tutti, sebbene abbiano avuto il merito di aver disgregato la «vecchia forma retorica», sono stati dei «pessimi costruttori», gente a cui - come Borgese afferma in Tempo di edificare - «dar vita a un personaggio pareva cosa stomachevole».
