Hardcover. Etat : Fair. Hardcover. Full leather binding with faded red title label and gilt stamping on spine. Title page dated 1792. 359 pages. In fair condition. Leather has some scratching and staining, with the spine especially worn and cracked, revealing signatures two inches from the foot of the spine. Bumped corners. Binding is cracked between pages 192 & 193, but otherwise holding quite securely. Previous owner's name in ink on title page. Pages are slightly wrinkled, with some foxing. A few pages have some creasing or small closed tears. I'm afraid the list of faults seems long, but it has exactly the kind of feel in your hands an old book should, and there's nothing to prevent anyone reading or enjoying this copy.

FIRST EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), 175 x 105 mms., pp. [ii], x [xi - xii blank], 359 [360 adverts], engraved frontispiece and engraved vignette on title-page, engraved music throughout text, stout library buckram; ex-library with library stamp in blind on title-page, autograph "J. Johnston" on top margin of title-page. The first song in this volume is "To Anacreon in Heaven," to which the American national anthem owes some musical debt. "Rule, Britannia" appears somewhat later. An American theme returns with "The Celebrated Death-Song of the Cherokee Indian, An Original Indian Air." A second volume was published in 1793.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. With the further volume published the following year. 12mo. Pp, x, 359. 1 page publisher's list. xi, 372. Half calf, raised bands, gilt; marbled boards. Extremities rubbed but the bindings are sound and secure. A damp stain with prominent tide mark affects the engraved frontis. and title page of volume one. A similar stain, though less extensive, affects the top corner of the last twenty pages. Pages 11/12 and 69/70 are torn without loss. A little scattered internal soiling. The second volume is unaffected. Nevertheless a nice copy.

Includes A Flaxen-Headed Cow-Boy, Ben Backstay, The Mulberry Tree, Golden Days of Good Queen Bess, The Twins of Latonia, The Death of Auld Robin Gray, and In My Pleasant Native Plains. In a full calf binding. There is wear to the extremities, including bumping. Internally the pages are generally bright with the occasional spots and handling marks. There are ink notations on the front pastedown. The hinges are starting. Internally, firmly bound. There are small stains on the frontis and title page as can be seen in the photographs above. There are several small closed tears. Very Good. book.
