Mit diesem philosophischen Begriff wirft Edith Stein eine Problematik auf, die die klassische Philosophie auÃen vor gelassen hat. Edith Stein thematisiert "Frem…dbewusstsein" und konfrontiert damit Descartes, der Philosophie zu einer Philosophie des Selbstbewusstseins gemacht hat. Die Studie legt dar, wie Edith Stein in ihrer Frühphilosophie in differenzierten Studien nachgewiesen hat, dass das Nichtthematisieren von Fremdbewusstsein einen wichtigen menschlichen Bereich ausblendet. Edith Steins Phänomenologie der Einfühlung versucht Fremdbewusstsein einzubeziehen und muss sich deshalb erneut mit den Grundlagen der Philosophie befassen: gelingende Einfühlung erfordert Bedingungen wie Konstitution des Ich, Leib, Intersubjektivität und Mensch als Person. Innerhalb dieser Grundlagenarbeit Edith Steins wird hier insbesondere die Abgrenzung von der Phänomenologie Husserls skizziert. Am deutlichsten ist sie erkennbar an den Begriffen "Konstitution" und "Leiblichkeit", wie sie Stein bzw. Husserl in dem von Husserl verà ffentlichten Werk "Ideen II" ausführten. Während der Vorbereitung dieses Bandes zur Herausgabe fügte Edith Stein eigene Passagen ein, die ihre eigene Position darlegten, mit denen aber Husserl nicht übereinstimmte und deshalb die Verà ffentlichung 35 Jahre hinauszà gerte. Diese grundlegende Vertiefung der Phänomenologie mit dem Konzept der Intersubjektivität durch Edith Stein wurde weder von Scheler noch von Heidegger aufgenommen, aber viel später von Maurice Merleau-Ponty bzw. Bernhard Waldenfels weitergeführt. Beide greifen die "Leib"-analyse Steins auf und führen sie unterschiedlich weiter. Merleau-Ponty hat seinen Wahrnehmungsbegriff darauf aufgebaut und stellt den herkà mmlichen Subjektbegriff in Frage. Waldenfels bezog sich auf Stein und Merleau-Ponty und radikalisierte Einfühlung als Selbstbezug im Fremdbezug.
