Notable as one of only a handful of books to be dedicated to Tolkien in his lifetime, the printed dedication reading simply 'For J.R.R. Tolkien'; the act of homage likely originating with W.H. Auden, who had attended Tolkien's lectures as an undergraduate, and admired his fiction. The work, particularly in the admired translation of Olive Bray (1908), is known to have been a general inspiration to Tolkien and the source of the dwarves' names in 'The Hobbit'.
