It's an East Meets West story about a teacher who travels to Indi a to visit her sister and finds herself in the position of mediator. betw een a man she begins to love (Indian), and her own family.

This book won the Harper Prize. The book is unmarked throughout, very clean, no tanning, spine is tight, boards rigid and tips are pointed. The jacket is unclipped but has a 5" closed tear and some wear down the front cover spine area. Chipping and wear at spine top and bottom with very light writing of three characters in length on the back cover top corner. Looks great in its shiny new plastic cover. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing. The L. A. Times writes, "White was the author of 10 books, including the novel "Elephant Hill"(1959), the short story collection "Foreign Soil" (1962), and the nonfiction "Be Not Afraid: the Story of a Tragically Afflicted Child and His Stubbornly Courageous Family" (1973), about the challenges of raising an epileptic son. He earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1950 before moving to California to be a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University in the 1956-57 academic year. Many of White's stories were set in India, where he was born to missionary parents July 12, 1928. He won the Harper Prize in 1959 from publisher Harper & Brothers (now HarperCollins) for "Elephant Hill" and an O. Henry Prize in 1960 for the short story "Shower of Ashes." From 1965 to 1969 he published and edited Per/Se, a literary magazine." The book is from the estate of screenwriter Pat Fielder, of whom Retrieval wrote, "she penned a quartet of sci-fi/horror films. She also wrote the 1962 western Geronimo (1962) and many episodes of TV's The Rifleman (1958) for Levy-Gardner-Laven." It appears they worked together on a screenplay of "House of Many Rooms.".
