Elihu Root was born here in Clinton, New York and for that reason many of us are quite familiar with his name and career. Nevertheless, when I prompted Wikipedia for some biographical information, I was pleased to find plenty, including a lot of which I had no idea. I quote a small portion of their material (with my thanks) here below: Elihu Root (February 15, 1845 February 7, 1937) was an American lawyer and statesman who served as the Secretary of War (1899 1904) under two presidents, including President Theodore Roosevelt. He moved frequently between high-level appointed government positions in Washington D.C. and private-sector legal practice in New York City. For that reason, he is sometimes considered to be the prototype of the 20th century political "wise man," advising presidents on a range of foreign and domestic issues. He was elected by the state legislature as a U.S. Senator from New York and served one term, 1909 1915. Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. I am pleased to be able to offer for your consideration a lovely two volume biography, titled: Elihu Root, by Philip C. Jessup. These large hard cover volumes (6 ½ x 9 ½ inches, 563 & 586 pages) were published by Dodd, Mead & Company, dated 1938 and a First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages and including the publisher s colophon on the latter. These volumes are illustrated and Volume I covers the period 1845-1909 while Volume II, 1905-1937. The endpapers are decorated with a map showing the Westward Journeys of Root s ancestors. There is a fine and handsome engraving of Elihu Root as a Frontispiece in Volume I. These two volumes are bound in dark blue finely ribbed cloth with gilt titles on cover and spine. These books are ex-library with all the usual markings but nothing too disfiguring and apparent limited circulation given their otherwise very good condition. They are also quite scarce in the booktrade; only one original two-volume copy found online. Condition: These two large books are in very good condition. As mentioned above, they are ex-library with a light shelf mark at the base of the spine and all the other librarian s markings. The hard covers are a bit bumped, slightly dust-dulled and the gilt titles on the spine a bit faded but still fully legible; those on the cover are bright and attractive. Other than the library markings, the books are very clean and the pages and plates clean and bright throughout both volumes. The hinges are all intact and the bindings are tight and sound in both volumes.
