Thus Beverly Kean describes Russia's merchant princes - the bankers, importers, and industrialists who emerged as a short-lived aristocracy in Moscow at the end of the 19th century. With their newly acquired welth and power, they opened museums and libraries, produced opera, financed art journals, influenced Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, and created the Moscow Art Theatre. Above all, they collected and commissioned paintings. This book tells for the first time the story of Sergey Ivanovich Shchukin, the collector who created the 'Museum of Matisse and Picasso' in Moscow, and introduced Cubism and radical art into Russia, an act which exposed young Russian artists to the masterpieces of the 20th century and thereby influenced the course of revolutionary art. With his friend Ivan Morozov, Shchukin amassed the magnificent collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art now in the Hermitage in Leningrad and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. Through a blend of history, original material, and personal interviews with surviving relatives, artists, and critics, All the Empty Palaces brings to life, not only these remarkable men, but their society, the turbulent period in which they lived, and the collections themselves. We see how the business acumen of one generation made possible the eccentricities and enthusiasm for art of the next; the strange, sometimes tragic family lives of Shchukin and Morozov and their relationships with Matisse and Picasso. This book contains new information and anecdotes about Diaghilev, Repin, Benois, Bakst, Shalyapin, Stanislavsky, and, in Paris, Gertrude and Leo Stein; about the dealers Daniel Henry Kataweiter and Ambroise Vollard from whom Shchukin and Morozov bought many of their pictures. Shchukin dominates this narrative - small, stuttering, but briliant and insatible, one of Moscow's financial giants who built a great textile empire before devoting himself to the creation of his historic collection. A detailed examination of the Shchukin and Morozov collections reveals the contrasting tastes that shaped them. The author also charts the effect of the collections on Russian critics and public, and on such artists as Malevich, Tatlin, and Larionov, who were suddenly exposed to Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism. At one point, any teacher exasperated with a pupil's rebellion against academic realism could safely ask, 'Have you been to Shchukin's?'. For a brief period after the Bolshevik Revolution, Shchukin and Morozov were permitted to act as curators and guides to their collections. In 1918, shortly after Shchukin's departure from Russia, a seal, personally signed by Lenin, was placed on the door of his home, nationalizing the contents and declaring them 'of great national importance for the people's culture.' A few months later, Morozov's collection also became the property of the State. A generous selection of reproductions of paintings indicates the individual preferences of Shchukin and Morozov in the work of the French painters they collected, and the response of Russian artists. Rare contemporary photographs provide unique glimpses of interiors and the merchants' displays of art treasures".
