Usures aux plats, fentes aux mors en partie haute et basse, un tout petit trou en haut du dos. Une trace d'humidité pp. 49-53, une mouillure claire en haut des planches. Bon état général malgré ces défauts, la couture est solide et le papier clair dans l'ensemble. Finely bound by Simier "R[elieur]. du Roi" in near contemporary full crimson morocco, sides decorated in blind and gilt with dice device to each corner, spine with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, yellow-coated endpapers, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt. Text in two columns. 16 engraved plates (some folding) illustrating a variety of different games including chess, billiards, dominoes, backgammon, the Game of the Goose, etc. etc. Ex libris Philip E. H. Samuel with his engraved bookplate to front pastedown. Generally an excellent copy in a most handsome complementary binding by René Simier. An encyclopaedia of some ninety games listed alphabetically and described with all their rules and special terminology. Our binding is signed at the foot of the spine the the requisite "Simier R[elieur] du Roi." While there were a number of binders named Simier in the nineteenth century, René Simier "pere" was the only one who was appointed Relieur du Roi.

Contemporary marbled sheep, spines divided by gilt rolls, red morocco labels, compartments with central gilt decorative lozenge tools, marbled edges and endpapers. Some toning and spotting, corner of one plate with a tidy old repair. Bindings rubbed and scuffed, corners and spine ends worn, a portion lost from head of vol. 2 backstrip. A scarce reference work, the first division - covering mathematics and games - of the enormous and unwieldy Encyclopédie méthodique par ordre des matières initiated by Charles Panckoucke in an attempt to update and expand Diderot?s Encyclopédie. Originally intended to cover 26 parts, it would update the original Encyclopédie while also rearranging its articles by subject instead of the random grouping of alphabetical order. Work began in 1782 and finished fifty years later (45 years later than intended) with somewhere around 150-200 volumes (depending on how the parts were gathered) having been produced. Few subscribers will have survived five decades and the French Revolution and compete sets are practically and philosophically almost unimaginable. Even the individual divisions are scarce: this Mathematics division was one of the first completed but rarely appears on the market. The small division of ?Games? was issued with the third volume of Mathematics, with its own set of plates.

The second and third parts are exceptionally rare, as they were published during the turmoil of the revolution. The first part specifically deals with games, and contains fine plates, which show various board games, card games, billiards, etc. The two later parts have numerous text figures. The three parts bound in reverse order. Boards and spine a bit worn and rubbed at extremities, two plate edges shaved, otherwise a very good, clean, unmarked copy. Brunet II, pp. 973-974; Cat.
