First published in German in 1963; this translation appears to have been taken from the Second edition, published in 1984. Trade Paperback. A detailed dictionary of more than 750 species and varieties. Each entry gives a precise description of form and flowers, with notes on origin, naming, and cultivation. Published almost 40 years ago at $55.00; one can only imagine what the price would be today. Although this text was first published in German in 1963, the concise yet comprehensive information it contains is far from dated. New species and hybrids, and renaming of some families, may have occurred over time but in the main the classification of cacti remains much as presented here. Well laid out to describe both physical structure and the mode of living of cacti, this book covers the various habitats the families grow in and provides maps of areas in which they naturally occur. Greenhouse and in-house cultivation~ soil preferences, watering and feeding habits and light requirements of the various types~are well covered. Building a collection of interest ; raising cactus hybrids; and pests also are well explained. Lest the prospective purchaser and reader expect dull reams of text, not so. Charts showing how to identify cacti by flower type and so forth are very useful. Further this encyclopedia is very well illustrated, almost all in color. The various plants are presented in alphabetical order which allows quick searches for any required. Not all individuals of any one family are illustrated as some families have over 300 members but the 192 pages of clear photos and identification for those cacti presented really do help identify that prickly character that so attracted you at the flower shop or greenhouse. A short glossary, and bibliography as well as a useful index round out the book. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 340 pages.
