In 1961 the inhabitants of the British South Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha were evacuated to England because of a volcanic eruption. This linguistic investigation is based on interviews with the islanders conducted by the BBC and University College, London. Following background material on history and methodology, the survey examines pronunciation, syntax, vocabulary and topographical names, using the International Phonetic alphabet in the interview transcriptions of their dialect. It records the names and ages of the population according to the Census returns of 1875 and 1966. It was the first fieldwork project carried out by Arne Zettersten (1934-2015), Swedish philologist, then a lecturer at the University of Lund, who became a professor at the University of Copenhagen in 1975.
