Nollet was a rival of Benjamin Franklins in defining the character and origins of electricity. His Lettres sur lElectricité pushed back on Franklins theories, though when Franklin attempted to replicate Nollets experiments, the results departed dramatically from the Abbes reports. Volume also contains four folding engraved plates. Handsome, uncommon edition of a text by an early investigator of the phenomenon of electricity, albeit one whose ideas have long been superseded. Marbled endpapers. Octavo: 17 × 10 cm; pag.: pp. xxiii, [1], 272, [2]ll. 1 frontispiece (shows an electrically charged test person who attracts "luminous particles" and emit them again as sparks) and 4 copper-engraved fold-outs. All edges marbled. ¶ Provenance: Bookplate to front pastedown of Dr. Desnos. ¶ Condition: Binding a bit scuffed and a few surface abrasions, small spot on front board, with slight waterstain to lower rear board. Inner hinges split but firm. Contents with occasional minor blemish but generally clean. Plate 4 with paper loss at fore edge, not affecting engaving. Overall, a very good copy. ¶ Notes: This 2nd edition, dated 1750, corresponds to the one at the Harvard Library. This edition was later reprinted several times by Guérin and also called "Seconde Édition" (cf. BnF Gallica: cb39308846k). ¶.

Abbé Nollet (1700-1770), who was a pupil of Réaumur and collaborator of du Fay, opened an office in Paris where he performed his experiments "live". The success was unexpected: the whole court thronged there and experimental physics became an amateur's pleasure and a fashionable entertainment to which Nollet contributed doubly since he manufactured and sold the instruments which allowed the beholders to repeat the experiments in their own places. Abbe Nollet's (1700-70) theory of the cause of electricity is first presented in book form in the present treatise. "Nollet's work. was originally published at Paris in 1746. He was the first to observe that pointed bodies electrified give out streams of light. He also found that glass and other non-conductors are more strongly excited in air than in vacuo; that the electric spark is more diffuse and unbroken in vacuo; and that an excited tube loses none of its electricity by being placed in the focus of a concave mirror when the sunlight is therein concentrated."
