Ajouter au panierHard Cover. Etat : Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First edition, second printing (May 1955, the same month as the first printing). Signed and inscribed by Piersall and Hirshberg to famed Cleveland sportswriter Hal Lebowitz on front free endpaper. With JSA Basic Certification (COA). Publisher's cream-colored cloth, with publisher's device stamped in blind to front board, and spine lettered in red; in its original yellow, red, white, and black dust jacket designed by Fannell Studios. About fine book, with light toning to head of spine, a tiny bit of wear to spine ends, and a hint of soiling to front board; very good clipped dust jacket, with light wear to head of spine, faint soiling to spine and panels, and few light scratches to front panel. Overall, an attractive copy. In Fear Strikes Out, Piersall relates his journey to becoming a professional baseball player and his highly publicized mental health issues. Following a series of violent and erratic incidents in 1952, including a fist fight with Billy Martin, Piersall was admitted to Westborough State Hospital and later diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Piersall went on to have a successful career, earning two all-star selections (1954, 1956), and two Gold Glove awards (1958, 1961). Fear Strikes Out was adapted into a film in 1957, starring Anthony Perkins (of Psycho fame) as Piersall and Karl Malden as his father. Hal Lebowitz (1916-2005) was a longtime Cleveland sportswriter and newspaper editor. He was the president of the Baseball Writers Association of America in 1966 and was awarded the prestigious J. G. Taylor Spink Award in 1999. Signed.
