This finely executed chart of flags depicts the national flags and cockades of the principal world powers of the mid-19th century, arranged by country. Covering Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, it presents an overview of the then-recognized states and empires, including France, England, Prussia, the Netherlands, Russia, the United States, the Ottoman Empire, China, Japan, and several Latin American republics. In addition to national flags, maritime and commercial ensigns are shown, together with the cockades of the various nationsround emblems used to indicate military or naval nationality. Among the European states are the Kingdom of Sardinia, which included not only the island of Sardinia but also Piedmont, Savoy, and Nice, and was ruled by the House of Savoy. This realm would later form the nucleus of a unified Italy. The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies encompassed southern Italy and the island of Sicily, with Naples as its capital, and was at the time the largest and wealthiest of the Italian states. The Ionian Islands, located west of Greece, had been under British protection since 1815 as the United States of the Ionian Islands, bearing their own flag with British elements; they were only ceded to Greece in 1864. The chart reflects the geopolitical and colonial order of its era, when the modern international system of flags was still taking shape. It is an early and decorative survey of the symbols of national identity and maritime sovereignty in the 19th century, drawn from the celebrated atlas of Andriveau-Goujonone of the foremost Parisian map and atlas publishers of the 18301860 period.
