Ajouter au panierCharles Morgan was a British playwright and novelist of English and Welsh parentage who worked with Admiral Godfrey and Ian Fleming in Naval Intelligence in WW2. The letter relates to a proposed dinner to be held at the Garrick Club on Monday June 6th to be attended by John Godfrey and Sam Courtauld (possibly the English industrialist and art collector who founded the Courtauld Institute of Art). The recipient of the letter "Onlo" is un-known. The content of the letter is interesting as it relates to Charles Morgan's observations about John Godfrey who was "my chief as Director of Naval Intelligence and afterwards commanded the Royal Indian Marine - & the mutiny was not his fault! Now retired. But what he is is history & scholarship. To me a fascinating & mysterious creature - one of the most brilliant organizers in the World - real flashes of genius - sometimes rather a prima donna - can be silly in feminine company. Odd & strange. Looks rather moon-faced but is a Henry Jamesian character .". Rear Admiral John Godfrey was, of course, the Head of Naval Intelligence (with Ian Fleming being his hand-picked Deputy Head). Photographs/scans available upon request. Signed by Author.
