[Handwritten number:] 974 [Typed under portrait:] SIDNEY W. DUNN" excellent state of preservation, crisp red ink accents, and the fascinating localized historical context-specifically the official stamped and handwritten markings from the San Francisco Police Department's "Pawn Shop Detail" dated May 26, 1937. Sidney W. Dunn was apprehended in 1937 after fleeing California, following a nationwide manhunt tracked by private detective agencies and police departments across multiple states. Because the circular was distributed to pawn shop and jewelry details across major West Coast hubs (like Seattle), his high-pressure sales tactics in the jewelry trade quickly gave away his location. He was extradited back to San Francisco to face the grand jury's indictment. He was tried and ultimately convicted on multiple counts of grand theft related to systemic jewelry and securities fraud. Dunn was served approximately 2 to 5 years in prison, which was the standard sentence for multiple counts of grand theft under California law during the late 1930s. Following his release from prison in the early 1940s, Dunn was placed on parole and kept a low profile to avoid further interaction with law enforcement. Because he was an educated man with a strong background in sales, he returned to working under alternative aliases in commercial sales across different states, shifting away from high-stakes jewelry fraud to minimize the risk of being re-flagged by private detective networks like Abbens Confidential Service. The second line Addresses the "SEATTLE CHIEF OF POLICE" because this specific copy of the circular was mailed directly to the Seattle Chief of Police as part of a multi-city dragnet. In 1937, when a high-profile fugitive fled a jurisdiction, agencies printed batches of these flyers and mailed them to police chiefs in major surrounding West Coast cities where the suspect was highly likely to hide. The bold text serves as an immediate, eye-catching prompt for the Seattle Police Department to alert them that a dangerous con artist might currently be operating inside their local jewelry stores and pawn shops.…

[Transcription 1: Wanted Poster:] AARON JACOBSON DESCRIPTION: 25 years. American-Hebrew [= USA born]. 5 ft. 6½ inches. 150 lbs. Complexion dark. Eyes maroon. Hair dark chestnut. Nose vex. [=Convex] Single. Occupation, stock broker. Born in Albany, N.Y. Recent address: 445 Blue Hill Avenue, Boston, Mass. Indictment charges that Jacobson was the keeper of a bucket shop in Boston from December, 1921, until May, 1922. Larceny of money of more than one hundred dollars. Larceny of shares of stock of the Eurekan Croesus Mining Company of the value of two thousand dollars. Larceny of shares of stock of the Metropolitan Credit Company of the value of two hundred and fifty dollars. Larceny of shares of stock of the Baldwin Oil Company of the value of three hundred dollars. If located arrest, notify this department and an exemplified copy of the indictment will be mailed immediately and the necessary papers for his extradition prepared. Very truly yours, J. F. MITCHELL Inspector ALBERT HURWITZ Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts [Image 2:] Fingerprint Record (Upside Down):] NAME: Aaron Jacobson BER No: 16235 CLASSIFICATION: 5010 1 U II 11 2 U OI 12) IMPRESSION TAKEN BY Rollins AT Boston, Mass. Prison Jan. 17/21" The Massachusetts indictment covers crimes committed up through May 1922. Since his fingerprint impressions were taken in Boston on January 17, 1921 (Image 2), he was already arrested, booked, and assigned a number (16235) by law enforcement a year before the terminal date of the bucket shop operation listed on the want poster. Because the fingerprint card predates the end of his indictment period, the subsequent "Want Poster" was generated because Jacobson skipped bail, fled the jurisdiction while on release, or additional crimes were discovered after he left town. The poster explicitly notes: "If located arrest. . . necessary papers for his extradition prepared." As a stockbroker Jacobson used his industry knowledge to prey on investors during the post-WWI economic boom. In a 1920s bucket shop, the broker took a client's money to buy stock but never actually placed the order. The "shop" logged the price on a ledger. If the stock went down, the broker kept the client's money. If the stock went up, the broker went bankrupt or fled. Jacobson also stole actual stock certificates of companies like Baldwin Oil to sell them for cash. On January 17, 1921 Jacobson is caught for some illegal act in Boston and is booked (Image 2). He was released on bail and between December 1921 and May 1922 he was back in the stock market, running a bucket shop and stealing $2,650 in cash and securities. In 1922, realizing Assistant Attorney General Albert Hurwitz has built a larceny case against him, he flees. Hence the wanted flyer (Image 1) with his 1921 mugshot. The 445 Blue Hill Avenue address listed on his description was a multi-unit residential and commercial strip in Roxbury. It primarily housed working-class local merchants, matching his profile as a young 25-year-old broker renting an apartment or operating locally while running his fraudulent stock schemes downtown. The Bertillon System During the late 1800s and early 1900s, police departments worldwide used a standardized physical classification system called the Bertillon System (developed by French criminologist Alphonse Bertillon). Rather than relying on vague descriptions, police officers were trained to classify specific body parts into rigid, geometric categories: Convex ("Vex"): The bridge of the nose has a curved, prominent hump or outward bow. Concave ("Cave"): The bridge curves inward, often called a button or upturned nose. Rectilinear ("Rect"): The bridge is completely straight from the root to the tip. . . . .…
