Ajouter au panierOctavo, cloth-backed boards. One of an undetermined number of subscriber's copies with front free endpaper signed by Brown and Reynolds. This copy a presentation copy signed to noted fan and publisher Gerry de la Ree by the publisher of Shasta Press, Erle Korshak. The second printing is the only printing of this anthology to have the signed front end paper bound in. Authorities differ on number of copies so issued, but the quantity appears to have been small as this book is rarely encountered with the editor's signatures on the end paper. According to Chalker and Owings, The Science-Fantasy Publishers (1991), pp. 398-99, the first printing was 3500 copies and this second printing numbered 2500 copies, of which 300 had the signed endpaper. Chalker and Owings incorrectly state that the "second printing notice" was "tipped in." Actually it is a "true" endpaper and conjugate with the front paste-down. Supposedly, the first batch of signed endpapers was returned by too late to be bound into copies of the first printing and these ended up in storage until they were used as limitation leaves in the signed issues of 1987 Phantasia Press edition of AND THE GODS LAUGHED and the second batch of signed end papers was used for Shasta's 1953 subscriber's issue. However, according to Melvin Korshak (typed letter to contributor George O. Smith dated 15 March 1954): "As to the matter of the 'Second Printing.' Actually, there's a very simple explanation for it. The printers put the plates of the book on the press without noticing that, somewhere in the process, they had managed to mangle a few letters of the type here and there. Quite a few copies were run off before this was noticed and the run halted. Corrections were made and we had them insert the 'Second Printing' notice on the copyright page. Actually, we had copies of both printings on hand here to ship out concurrently, so I suppose you got one of the 'Second Printing' jobs." Collects thirteen stories by Richard Matheson, William Tenn, Fredric Brown, Eric Frank Russell, Mack Reynolds, Henry Kuttner, Nelson Bond, and others. A nearly fine copy in a very good to nearly fine dust jacket with darkening at the spine panel and several shallow chips to the head of the spine panel. A scarce and desirable state of this book. (32980) Second printing (so marked on copyright page).
