Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. First Edition, First Printing, Ex-library. No jacket. Original yellow cloth binding with brown lettering on spine. Binding is in good condition, with some dirt and handling marks on boards. Interior pages are somewhat tanned but unmarked. The Congregational Library of Boston has a pasted catalog number on the spine, a stamp on the title page, and due date slip and card pocket on rear pastedown and endpaper. The book was a timely exploration of Germany under Nazi leadership written by Raimund Pretzel (1907-1999) under the pseudonym Sebasitan Haffner. Haffner was a German journalist and historian who became a political exile and émigré to England in the late 1930s. The book is in part a psychological examination of the Reich, and of German sentiment about Nazism from its leadership, to its supporters, and its opponents. It contains a historical rationale for the rise of Nazism from the Prussian Reich of the 19th century, and also a chapter of dismantling the Reich and eradicating a Nazi mentality in Germany. Hardcover, good condition, 327 pages, 12mo.

Ajouter au panierTaschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Both works in this volume - a play by Carl Zuckmayer (1896-1977) and an unusual contemporary study of Nazi Germany by Sebastian Haffner (1907-99) - bear testimony to the disturbing events that were to change German history in the aftermath of World War I. The abridged translation of The Devil's General, which was approved by Zuckmayer himself, is about a World War I flier who commits suicide as he comes to realize the unintended havoc he has wrought in his obsession to fly. Sebastian Haffner, whose real name was Raimund Pretzel (which was changed with the publication of Germany: Jekyll and Hyde), remained a controversial journalist all his life, working for both left-wing and right-wing journals. The work excerpted here was written in 1940 when Haffner, reared in a liberal tradition, was in a British detention camp as an enemy alien.
