A fine first edition thus of Roald Dahls book The Gremlins, in hardback covers with no dust jacket as published, published by Dark Horse in 2006. This fine unread book has red pictorial boards with titles in yellow and black on the front and black only on the spine with yellow end papers displaying the gremlins of the title. The tight, bright, book has no marks, bumps or writings over its 52 pages. This book is as new and has not been read. The copyright page shows the number line 1 through to 10 indicating the first edition thus. The price in US Dollars is shown on the back of the book. The cover illustration shows the gremlins fixing a Spitfire. This book written in 1942 was Roald Dahls first book, while he was a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF, on assignment to the British Embassy in Washington, after a period as a fighter pilot at the outbreak of the World War II in 1939. Walt Disney was enamored by the gremlins and was to turn it into a movie as recounted in some detail by Leonard Maltin in his introduction, but for various reasons the movie was never made. This book however features illustrations of the gremlins by the Walt Disney Studio artists, hence the subtitle The Lost Walt Disney Production about the Gremlins and the Royal Air Force. The book is in pristine condition. The original book published by Random House in 1943 is now very expensive, so this is cost effective way of obtaining the first book written by Roald Dahl. Dahl was recuperating from a crash while serving with the RAF when, encouraged by his friend C.S. Forester, he began writing. A manuscript of this first novel was sent to Walt Disney, who decided to make the story into a film, and Dahl went to Hollywood to help with the screenplay. Though Dahl later claimed he invented the term "Gremlins," the pesky devils had actually been part of RAF lore since the previous war. However, they were unknown in the U.S. and Disney, intending to pave the way for the film in the American market, arranged for the publication of this book. Though uncredited, one of the primary artists for this volume was Walt Kelly. Disney's plan was too successful - Warner Brothers produced two short Gremlin cartoons and shortly afterwards Walt Disney lost interest in the project and stopped production on the film. Eleanor Roosevelt enjoyed reading the book to her grandchildren and invited Dahl to the White House (there have been claims, perhaps self-aggrandizing on Dahl's part, that based upon this introduction Dahl served as an unofficial liaison between FDR and Churchill). A nice copy, in a flawed jacket.
