The majority of the engravings are by Romeyn de Hooghe. All illustrations and decorations except the portrait are coloured by a contemporary hand and lavishly heightened with gold.Additionally, the letters on the half title, the title page, and the start of the dedication are highlighted in red and gold. Conceived by the Huguenot historian Jacques Basnage (1653-1723) and translated into Dutch by Arnoldus Alewyn, the work was designed not merely as a text, but as a grand pictorial programme in which history unfolds through image as much as through narrative. At the heart of the book's visual power lies the contribution of Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), one of the most inventive and politically engaged printmakers of the Dutch Golden Age. His engravings, here present in remarkable quantity and enhanced with contemporary hand-colouring and gold, transform the volume into a theatrical panorama of biblical and historical scenes. The plates range from intimate narrative compositions to expansive architectural and topographical views, culminating in the striking double-page representations of the Temple of Jerusalem, the city of Jerusalem, and a world map that situates sacred history within a global framework. The work exemplifies the early 18th-century fascination with universal history, in which biblical events, classical antiquity, and more recent history are interwoven into a continuous and divinely ordered narrative. The present work belongs, according to the STCN and Poortman, to the third impression. The elaborate contemporary binding, with its gold-tooled allegorical globe, is bound by the so-called Double Drawer Handle Bindery (see Storm van Leeuwen). With an ownership inscription on the engraved title page: "Margaretha Stegnerus donat [] Eppina Hebbelia donat Sponsus H. Stegnerus. This Bible was given to me by the Reverend Mr W. H. Folckers, preacher in Scheemda, on the condition that it shall remain within the family of the Reverend Mr R. F. Folckers, formerly preacher in Groningen, as may be seen above from its family provenance Widow Stegnerus." The binding shows some wear; a large number of the engraved leaves have been reinforced. Lacking a double-page map ("De Reysen Christi Des Heyland ." showing the Mediterranean Sea), 12 illustrations and 4 engraved tailpieces on 8 plates (nos. 20-21, 26-27, 40-41, 69, 70, 107-108, 135, and 136).
