Paperback. Etat : Good. As the days got longer, Number 10 was sure that Anna would have extra time for him. However, increasing numbers of after-school activities kept her from coming home on time. He watched from his cage as the yellow bus rumbled down the road without stopping. But where was Anna? He didn't understand that she was a teenager now, and her friends were progressively more important. Her girlfriends came over to the house to visit more often. They loved playing with the pup and tossing the ball, but it didn't take long until they all went giggling into the house leaving him alone again. Of course, Anna still loved him, but when she did arrive home, she had her friends over, her homework to get done, her mother to help with dinner, and her chores to finish. To get Anna's attention and have a good time, Number 10 learned to grab the broom's wiry bristles as a new game of play. Anna would laugh which pleased him so he continued his attacks. But, this pastime was short-lived, and after getting a bit of dry kibble, he was once again alone. What no one realized was that a neighbor had been watching Number 10 closely over the course of the year when he came for occasional visits. Without fail, he always went over to the pen, and Number 10 loved having someone else coming to see him. The neighbor's face was kind and his expressions were soft. The young dog sensed that this man had a kind heart, and as his hands glided down the dog's body, they must have felt comforting. He was no longer a little puppy and his legs were getting long as he grew into a youngster. He couldn't fit into anyone's lap anymore, but he tried with great exuberance as he offered his belly for a nice rub. Summer came and soon left and the signs of another autumn began to appear once again. Number 10 was the only dog left in the empty, dirty cages. Unlatched gates swung in the breeze and banged against the sides of the pens. Although he couldn't hear the loud noises, he could feel the vibration against his body. The young pup's world was mixed with extreme highs of anticipated love and great lows of fear and abandonment. His world was silent, but he didn't know anything else. He was confused and longed to understand, and the only way to do that was to watch for some sort of cue. What he did understand was that Franklin Brown's touch was terrifying and cruel. One afternoon while Number 10 waited for Anna to come home and spend time with him, the caring human drove up to the house. Instead of coming to see Number 10 first like he usually did, he went directly inside the house. He held a leash in his left hand. That was puzzling. It didn't take long for him to come back outside with Anna's mother, and they both walked down to the dog's cage. Opening the gate, the man slowly bent down and motioned for Number 10 to come to him. Most other times the young dog would have scampered over to him, but something felt unusual. Anna's mother was there and because this man was kind before, Number 10 moved timidly toward him. The treat in the man's hand helped to convince him and he voraciously devoured it. The leash that the man carried in his hand was clipped onto Number 10's collar, and he was led to a truck. The man gently lifted the pup inside. Unfamiliar to riding in a vehicle, the pup shrank down to the floor between the seat and dashboard, looking up at the ceiling and the windows. Just before the door closed, Anna's mother and the man shared a hug and she turned to leave. Number 10 must have been confused as he fumbled his way up to peer out the rear window. Dust rose from the driveway as they drove away, and he watched Anna's house grow smaller in the distance. …

Paperback. Etat : Good. In a world filled with comparison, confined creativity, limited flexibility, and sustained dissatisfaction, young adults are suffering from a lack of pure passion and zest for life now more than ever. Social media makes things so easy to constantly feel your life is not as good as the person on your Snapchat feed or Instagram scroll, and today's society puts so much emphasis on being the perfect person that adolescents are setting themselves up for an impossible standard to reach. The youth of our generation needs to be reminded that they have the power within themselves to set their own standards and go after their innermost blissful desires to create more thrill and purpose in their lives than they could ever deem possible. Magic in the lives of young adults needs to be reinstalled, dreams need to be reintroduced, and seeds of passion for life needs to be replanted. Be Your Own Hero cultivates a mind-set that the door to success always swings inward, not outward. In order to achieve your external goals, you must work on your inner self. This book aims to help young adults realize that their external empire only goes as far as their internal empire. By building a sense of self heroism and an ability to save themselves versus relying on external factors to do their saving for them, young adults can not only dream bigger but also love and serve bigger-leading them to a life they never thought possible.…

Hunter's Hero: My Mommy has Breast Cancer is written from the author's son's, Hunter's, perspective after his mommy is diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of thirty-just one year after he was born. Young women with breast cancer face unique challenges due to the stage of their lives when they are diagnosed. Often children or planning to have children are part of that unique equation that impacts treatment plans. Shannon wrote this book, and the Hunter's Hurdles collection, to share this story and other life hurdles she and her family have faced including: breast cancer, congenital heart disease and brachycephaly. Whether you have experienced these life hurdles yourself, know someone who has or just want to open your child's mind to the challenges others face-there is a lesson in Hunter's Hurdles for everyone. Plus, every book you purchase is an opportunity to make a difference in someone else's life-good reads for good deeds. Katie Yost (illustrateur). …

Hardback. Etat : Good. In the dark days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, a unique bond developed between Lieutenant John Bulkeley and larger-than-life General Douglas MacArthur. Wild Man Bulkeley's small fleet of PT boats were, after all, virtually the only force capable of carrying out offensive action against the overwhelming Japanese attack. This unlikely relationship forged in the midst of catastrophe culminated in one of the most thrilling moments of World War II - the escape from Corregidor related in this powerful book. MacArthur's Escape recreates the drama and danger of March 12, 1942 when, under cover of darkness, four PT boats under Bulkeley's command slipped out of Manila Bay to run the Japanese blockade on a harrowing two-day, 600-mile trip to Mindanao - where long range bombers waited to carry the general to Australia to begin the long hard road back to the Philippines.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. England manager Gareth Southgate's decision to appoint Kane, still just twenty-three years old, as the team captain in 2017 could have been seen as premature, bringing with it pressure that could damage a young player's career. However, he knew that Kane, a modest, humble and inspiring figure was up to the task.Having lost faith in the national team, English fans weren't sure the players would even make it out of their group. No one could have predicted that this young and relatively inexperienced side would achieve their best result since 1990, or that their captain would win the tournament's Golden Boot with six goals. Perhaps most importantly for the team and their manager, they brought the country together to make for an unforgettable summer. While their eventual semi-final loss to Croatia came as a stinging disappointment, this is just the start for the team and their skipper, one of our most exciting players for a generation and a truly world-class English star.In this in-depth biography, bestselling sports writer Frank Worrall traces Kane's journey from an ordinary childhood in north London, growing up just a few miles from White Hart Lane, to the most remarkable tournament of his career.…

Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Changes in life are constant but can often be difficult for children to grasp. Why My Hero Had to Go offers a way for children to relate to what change can look and feel like while also bringing a sense of understanding through courage, kindness, responsibility and inclusion. This unique and vibrant picture book has a little something for everyone. Take a journey through the pages as the curtain is pulled back to show the heartfelt voice of a parent leaving for deployment or as a front line worker. This unique picture book brings to life the parallel experiences of a parent and a child separated by the call of duty. Children gain a better sense of understanding and responsibility as they tag along with the main character Jared, who is on a special mission with pet Bailey and his cuddly toy bear. With heartfelt poetic words Why My Hero Had to Go offers a different perspective for children to know that they are not alone when a parent is called to service. Creating a book that speaks to the voice of the untold stories was critical to author Talitha Vickers who also comes from a military family. Drawing from her own personal experience with her nephew Jared, Vickers puts words to emotions that there are often no words for. It's a powerful teaching tool with foreshadowing messages that truly resonates with all readers. The creative imagination of illustrator Keith Hobgood opens the door to a world that a child would otherwise never see though each hand drawn page. The nontraditional layout of Hobgood's illustrations shows just how much a child and parent have in common every day despite being separated by distance. This educational tool serves as a critical resource for all front line workers, military families, their neighbors, teachers and fellow students to have a first-hand look at a different perspective of families with a unique dynamic. Hobgood, Keith (illustrateur).…
