Ltd., London 1912 First Edition 420pp plus folding map and 4pp adverts. Illustrated Hardback. This copy is bound in publisher's original uniform blue linen covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and the upper board. There is some bumping to the bottom right hand corner and there is a small neat inscription to the f.e.p. A dust wrapper is not present. The text block is tight, white, bright and square . Between the end of the nineteenth century and the Second World War Macmillan published a much-loved and extremely successful series of books under the title of 'Highways and Byways'. In them, the authors took readers on a delightful guided tour of the country, county by county, pointing out places of interest, key historical events and local lore and legend. Nelly Erichsen (9 December 1862 - 15 November 1918) was an English illustrator and painter. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, she was born into a wealthy professional Danish family. After studies at the Royal Academy of Art in the 1880s, she pursued a successful career as an illustrator and writer, working with a number of publishing firms including J.M. Dent and Macmillan, and jointly publishing travel books with Janet Ross, a prominent member of the Anglo-Tuscan pre-War community. Ref G1.

First published in 1912, reprinted in 1919 and 1924. The First Pocket edition was published in 1923.## ## The SOMERSET edition of this series of books is in its original blue cloth covering; the titling is gilded on the spine and front cover. The top of the pages is coloured blue, with regular bumping to the corners and spine bottom. Inside, there is no foxing throughout the text. The index lightly foxed inside the cover and free endpapers. The page edges are age discoloured. ## SOMERSET pullout map is clean, untorn, and folded correctly on page 401: ## I am surprised they have lasted. ## This book is over 100 years old # ## There are over 95 illustrations by Nelly Erichsen. The drawing's quality is fantastic; when drawn, a moment in history will never be again; what an excellent way to see how much of the subject of the drawings has changed or disappeared. Take this book on a journey to find each drawing's subject for real.## ## BIT OF HISTORY: Macmillan published the Highways and Byways series of 36 regional guides between 1898 and 1948. These guides are noted for their presentation of a wide variety of exciting places, notable historical events, local flora and fauna, folklore, and legends, as well as the artwork produced by many noted artists, including Arthur B. Connor, Nelly Erichsen, Frederick L. Griggs, Joseph McCullough, Edmund H. New, Joseph Pennell, Hugh Thomson, Sir D.Y. Cameron and S. R. Badmin. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
