Ajouter au panierCloth. Etat : Good. None (illustrateur). A complete, early set of 'A History of Our Own Times From the Accession of Queen Victoria to the General Election of 1800' written by M.P. Justin McCarthy. In four volumes complete. A new edition. Justin McCarthy (1830 - 1912) was an Irish nationalist and Liberal historian, novelist and politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1879 to 1900, taking his seat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. McCarthy's real bent was towards literature. His earliest publications were novels, some of which, such as A Fair Saxon, Dear Lady Disdain, Miss Misanthrope, Donna Quixote, attained considerable popularity. His most important work is his History of Our Own Times (Volumes I to IV were published 1879 - 1880 and volume v in 1897), which treats of the period between Queen Victoria's accession and her Diamond Jubilee. Easily and delightfully written, and on the whole eminently sane and moderate, these volumes form a brilliant piece of narrative from a Liberal standpoint. He also began a History of the Four Georges (1884 - 1901), of which the latter half was written by his son, Justin Huntly McCarthy. With 'Opinions of the Press' to front of volume IV. In cloth bindings. Externally, sound but with slight wear to extremities, slight rubbing and occasional marks. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places with some pages detached to volume one. Bright with only the slight spotting to endpapers and handling mark mostly to first and last few pages. Good. book.
